Critical Incident Policy
Definition
A critical incident is an incident or sequence of events that overwhelms the normal coping mechanisms of the school and disrupts the running of the school.
Where a situation occurs that is considered by the Critical Incident Team as critical, the procedure outlined in this document will be implemented.
Members of the Critical Incident Management Team
Team Leader: Margaret Lowry or, in her absence, Deirdre O’Shea
Role
¨ Decision maker
¨ Alerts team members of Critical Incident
¨ Convenes meeting
¨ Co-ordinates tasks for team
¨ Keeps in touch with all team members
¨ Communicates with Board of Management & N.E.P.S
¨ Liaises with bereaved family
Staff Liaison Officer: Deirdre O’Shea
Role
¨ Convenes meeting of teachers
¨ Outlines the facts
¨ Identifies vulnerable students
¨ Plans routine for day
¨ The Staff Liaison Officer will be free of class duties at this time to fulfill her role
Student Liaison Officer: Carmel Smith
Role
¨ Identifies vulnerable students and alerts staff to these students
¨ Organises counselling
¨ Liaises with teachers and parents about students
Parent Liaison Officer: Margaret Lowry/ Deirdre O’Shea
Role
¨ Meets individual parents
¨ Liaises with parents of deceased
¨ Convenes a meeting for parents to outline help available if symptoms of trauma persist after a number of months.
Community Liaison Officer: Ann Malone
Role
¨ Networks with community groups (i.e GAA, parish committee)
¨ Co-ordinates community involvement (choir, guard of honour)
¨ Keeps records of involvement with community groups
¨ Updatse team members
Media Liaison Officer: Carmel Smith & Margaret Lowry
Rôle
¨ Organise press release
¨ State the facts simply and briefly
¨ What has been done and what is going to be done
¨ Only person to speak to the media will be Team Leader
¨ Inform DES Communications office.
What to do when an incident occurs
Short term Actions (1st 24 hours)
¨ Gather accurate information
¨ Contact appropriate agencies
¨ Convene a meeting with Critical Incident Team
¨ Arrange supervision of students
¨ Hold a staff meeting
¨ Organize timetable for the day
¨ Inform parents
¨ Inform students
¨ Make contact with bereaved family
¨ Deal with the media
¨ Identify high risk students and what supports are available
Medium Term Actions (2nd & 3rd Day)
¨ Review the events of first 24 hours
¨ Arrange support for students/parents
¨ Plan for re-integration of student/staff
¨ Plan visit to injured
¨ Liaise with family re: funeral
¨ Attendance and participation at funeral
¨ School closure
Longer Term Actions (couple of weeks later)
¨ Monitor students
¨ Evaluate response and amend plan
¨ Formalize plan
¨ Inform new staff / new school (secondary school) /new pupils of incident
¨ Anniversaries.
