Harvesting our school garden provides a healthy lunch for all!

As part of our Health Promoting School action plan. Scoil San Nioclás focused on healthy eating.
Eating well is important for all of us. In the short-term, it can help us to feel good, look our best and stay at a healthy weight. And in the long-term, a healthy, balanced diet can reduce our risk of heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers.  But what exactly is a healthy, balanced diet?
In simple terms, to eat a balanced diet you need to combine several different types of foods - from each of the main food groups - in the right amounts so your body gets all the nutrients it needs while maintaining a healthy weight.  This means you should eat:
  • Plenty of bread, rice potatoes, pasta and other starchy foods
  • Plenty of fruit and vegetables
  • Some milk, cheese and yoghurt
  • Some meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein, and
  • Just a small amount of foods and drinks high in fat and/or sugar

Scoil San Nioclás promotes healthy eating by growing organic vegetables in our vegetable garden!

Our 10@10 for promoting exercise in primary schools!

Welcome back to school, Scoil San Nioclás!

Lighthouses of Ireland.
A project by 3rd & 4th Class.

Headlands are very dangerous for ships. Lighthouses are usually built on headlands to warn passing ships with their flashing light.
Each person from 3rd and 4th Class chose an actual lighthouse from the Irish Coastline. Using photos of the real lighthouse, we made our lighthouse out of clay and then painted it in its actual colours. Finally, each of us used an electrical circuit to light up our lighthouse.
We hope you enjoy these three short videos about our project.

Scoil San Nioclás promotes 'Healthy Lunchboxes Campaign'.

Scoil San Nioclás promotes healthy lunchboxes! Good food habits set early in childhood can last a lifetime. Lunches provide around one third of our daily nutritional needs, so it’s important to put some thought and planning into them. Please click here for more information and tips on how to prepare a healthy lunchbox.
Upload photos of your healthy lunchboxes here and win a chance for Kathryn Thomas to visit your school!

Scoil San Nioclás held a Christmas Carol Service in Windgap Parish Church on 18/12/2015.

The presentation of cheques for a very successful fundraiser in aid of Scoil San Nioclás & The Homecare Team.

A very successful Tractor Run was held by The Parents Association of Scoil San Nioclás to honour the memory of Mr John Smyth RIP. Over 220 tractors were entered, which was an amazing amount and reflected on just how highly regarded John Smyth was in the community. Entries came from both inside the parish and neighbouring counties as well. There was great excitement and all the children were able to participate either by riding on their parents' tractors or attending activities in the parish hall and Killamery. There was a huge amount of hard work and effort put in by the Parents Association and many others, in organising the actual tractor run, and the auction and raffle of farm goods and produce which was held outside the Auld House in Killamery. €10,000 was the total amount raised and that was split equally between Scoil San Nioclás and The Home Care Team. Mr Ian Wilson, Director of The Home Care Team received the cheque from The Parents Association. Jean Smyth and her family were also present.
